Presentation
Although the uterus is not present, rudimentary uterine anlagen (structure) are often present. The tubes and ovaries are often normal. [ispub.com]
Present On Admission POA Help "Present On Admission" is defined as present at the time the order for inpatient admission occurs — conditions that develop during an outpatient encounter, including emergency department, observation, or outpatient surgery [icd10data.com]
In partial subtype, remnant of accessory pancreatic duct and minor papilla are present with variable amount of pancreatic body. [pancreas.imedpub.com]
Case presentation A 46 years old woman presenting cyphoscoliosis and very low stature (120 cm – 3,93 feet), came to our observation for acute pelvic pain; she also reported primary amenorrhoea associated with cyclic pelvic pain. [bmcwomenshealth.biomedcentral.com]
It is mostly reviewed in western literature under pediatric surgery, as the median age of presentation is 12.5 years (birth-25yrs), but in our setup it usually falls into the gynecologists purview as the age of presentation is in early childbearing age [ijmedph.org]
Entire Body System
- Short Stature
These conditions include: Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a disorder in which the uterus and vagina are absent or underdeveloped, in addition to other abnormalities MURCS association – includes MRKH symptoms, spine abnormalities, short [texaschildrens.org]
Patients with pure gonadal dysgenesis/agenesis are often short in stature with primary or secondary amenorrhea. Patients may have either 46,XX (Perrault syndrome and others) or 46,XY karyotypes (Swyer syndrome). [clinicaladvisor.com]

Skin
- Flushing
The vagina is present and may appear as a small flush dimple, or longer, without a cervix at the vaginal apex. [acog.org]
Neurologic
- Headache
Although rare in patients younger than 40 years of age, gonadotropin secreting pituitary tumors should be ruled out if there are clinical signs of mass effect (headaches, visual field changes, etc.). [clinicaladvisor.com]
Urogenital
- Amenorrhea
At a Glance Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual blood flow. [clinicaladvisor.com]
In case of persistent primary amenorrhea, despite estrogen replacement, this unusual combination should be considered in girls with CHARGE syndrome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Here, we report two cases of MRKH syndrome, one in a 20-year-old woman who presented with primary amenorrhea (MRKH Type I) and the other in a 65-year-old woman with primary amenorrhea and associated renal malformations and a rare ovarian sertoliform variant [mjdrdypu.org]
It’s a congenital disorder in women, in which the embryonic Müller conducts don’t develop, and as a consequence the woman suffers from primary amenorrhea and absence of uterus and vagina, but functional uterus. [invitra.com]
Introduction Congenital absence of a uterus and upper vagina also de scribed as Müllerian aplasia or Müllerian agenesis the most common cause of vaginal agenesis The most common single diagnosis cause of primary amenorrhea (15% of cases) Chromosomally [medbullets.com]
- Primary Amenorrhea

Although detection of streak gonads on ovarian biopsy confirms PGD, its utility in patients with primary amenorrhea is questionable. [clinicaladvisor.com]

- Imperforate Hymen
These disorders include: imperforate hymen, obstructed hemi-vagina, transverse vaginal septum, Obstructed uterine horns, cervical atresia and others. [childrens.com]
In adults, amenorrhea is an important clue and may suggest an imperforate hymen, vaginal septum or absence of the uterus. [glowm.com]
On physical examination, the imperforate hymen with hematocolpos will appear as a blueish-colored bulging membrane without the typical hymenal fringe. [acog.org]
Vaginal agenesis may be inappropriately diagnosed as an imperforate hymen, and misguided attempts at hymenotomy may result in secondary scar formation. This mismanagement can lead to treatment difficulties in the future. [isna.org]
- Delayed Menarche
The family history revealed delayed menarche of the mother which was at age 21. [ispub.com]
Workup
Thus, in the context of MRKH syndrome, US could provide very useful information in patient workup. [journals.lww.com]
Treatment
Surgical treatment of uterine cervical atresia appears to be a good choice of treatment with good functional result. Materials and methology: We report a case of a 19-year-old woman who was admitted to our Department with amenorrhea and pelvic pain. [journals.viamedica.pl]
Patients have many questions about life after treatment. When can I have sex? Though you should talk to your health care provider before having sex, it is often ok to start 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. [urologyhealth.org]
Non-surgical and surgical treatments are available to correct the condition. Women with vaginal agenesis may regain full fertility after treatment, but in some cases may only be able to get pregnant through assisted reproductive treatments. [arm.coloradowomenshealth.com]
Cervical duplication treatment is typically not urgent unless the condition causes symptoms or if a woman is pregnant or trying to get pregnant. [childrens.com]
You will be taught dilator therapy and supervised by the Clinical Nurse Specialist throughout your treatment. This is the preferred and first line of treatment for the women seen at this centre. [mrkh.org.uk]
Prognosis
Affected individuals should talk to their physician and medical team about their specific case, associated symptoms and overall prognosis. [rarediseases.org]
Future research should analyze the relationship between the different anatomic variants found in this syndrome and their clinical findings (referring particularly to obstetrical prognosis) to improve counselling to patients at the moment of diagnosis. [academic.oup.com]
Many anomalies occur infrequently so that only physicians in large medical centers may see them frequently enough to be aware of the possible anomalies and their causation, prognosis, and, in some cases, correction. [glowm.com]
Etiology
With a provisional diagnosis of MRKH syndrome and a right pelvic mass of uncertain etiology, the patient underwent a laparotomy. [journals.lww.com]
The true etiology of ipsilateral ovarian and/or tubal absence has yet to be elucidated ( 1 – 3 ). [spandidos-publications.com]
] In the Vater syndrome, unilateral renal agenesis is associated with other multiple anomalies such as ventricular septal defects, vertebral anomalies, anorectal atresia, tracheal and esophageal lesions. [6] There are two main theories regarding the etiology [njssjournal.org]
Because of day-to-day variability in estrogen concentrations, the progestin challenge test is often preferred to establish estrogen reserves and/or etiology of primary amenorrhea in patients with an intact uterus and some secondary sex characteristics [clinicaladvisor.com]
The etiology of MRKH syndrome is unknown but it is believed that embryological development is interrupted during the sixth or seventh week of gestation [9]. [ijri.org]
Epidemiology
[…] development of engineered vaginas using the patient's own cells has resulted in fully functioning vaginas capable of menstruation and orgasm in a number of patients showing promise of fully correcting this condition in some of the sufferers. [20] [21] Epidemiology [en.wikipedia.org]
Prevention
The dilators are kept even after surgery to prevent vaginal stenosis. The Veccihietti procedure is a laparoscopic procedure which has been shown to result in a vagina that can be compared to a normal vagina in patients suffering from MA. [hxbenefit.com]
There is no known cause and there is nothing a mother did or can do to prevent this from happening to their unborn daughter. The disease is also known as vaginal agenesis or mullerian agenesis. [miklosandmoore.com]
